Creating the World's most sustainable commercial building
In 2012, leading financial software, data and media company, Bloomberg, embarked on an ambitious project to transform a 1.1 million square foot site into a technology-rich workspace. Built to inspire collaboration and fuel innovation, every decision from design to construction was made with employees in mind. With sustainability high on the agenda, Bloomberg aspired to create a smart building where the vast majority of building systems and building management systems reside on the IP network.
Over the course of the project, PTS oversaw the implementation of an estimated £70million worth of technology. The creative solutions developed by PTS, compatible with the architect's 'design-first' ethos, enable the development's 4000 users to benefit from carefully designed workspaces. Users can work seamlessly throughout the technology-enriched spaces which include fully equipped meeting rooms, a 290 seat multi-purpose room, a 240-seat auditorium and hundreds of diverse break-out spaces.
With all systems including the BMS on a single network designed by PTS, rooms quickly respond to changes within the environment. In conjunction with the innovative design of the building’s structure, the Client can operate a sustainable building which focuses on the well-being of not only the inhabitants within, but the wider community and the planet. As a result, the building was awarded a BREEAM rating of 98.5%, the highest sustainability rating of any commercial building in the world.
PTS assisted Bloomberg with the deployment of a spine-leaf campus network with a layer 3 IP fabric at Bloomberg’s new UK HQ site which allowed Bloomberg to meet their requirements of a highly available, performant and scalable network architecture. The network was designed to allow the flexibility of creating multiple security domains through the use of virtualised networking which helped Bloomberg with segregating network traffic and enforcing security policy across their new site.
PTS assisted Bloomberg throughout the lifecycle of the project, including the design phase, procurement, and implementation management and helped to create a network that contained:
Approx. 25,000 network ports for the Campus network
Approx. 2,000 network ports for the Wi-Fi network
Approx. 1,300 network ports for the out-of-band network
Approx. 4,000 network ports for the Media control network
The overarching architecture provided a platform for Bloomberg to deploy various different and isolated virtual networks within each of the areas defined above, for example, providing the ability for corporate network traffic and building management traffic to co-exist on the same campus network switches (while maintaining logical isolation and segmentation from a security standpoint).
PTS ensured that Bloomberg’s requirements were met throughout the lifecycle of the project and helped ensure the delivery of a world-class, leading-edge campus network incorporating the latest in innovative network design philosophy, delivered both to schedule and within budget constraints
• Intelligent, interconnected systems which reside on the single network played a significant role in creating the breathable, sustainable building. The Bloomberg site now boasts a BREEAM rating of 98.5%, the highest sustainability rating of any commercial building in the world.
• The data provided by the intelligent, interconnected systems will provide Bloomberg with detailed performance and space utilisation analytics, aiding decision making and allowing Bloomberg to constantly monitor and improve the efficiency of the building
• The future-proofed infrastructure allows Bloomberg to incorporate state-of-the-art innovations and systems onto the existing corporate network
• PTS’ approach to managing various workstreams through the Project Management Office (PMO) brings control to the project in a way that ensures risks are rapidly managed and mitigated now and into the future

• The heart of the building is open space, which encourages people and information to move more seamlessly
• Open meeting rooms and technologically enhanced collaboration areas enable staff to break-out and work together in private areas or open spaces. Each break-out area supports the staff’s needs promoting mobility throughout the building
• Staff and visitors can make use of the various wayfinding stations throughout the building to identify room and space occupancy, book meeting rooms and find their way around the 1.1 million square foot site
• The office environment itself has been designed to suit a range of working styles. Multipurpose layouts and furniture allow for individual and team preferences to be met
• Users enjoy an improved experience in the 240-seat auditorium and multipurpose rooms which include voice-lift stadium like technologies to capture the voices of high-level attendees and sample the background noise to modify both in such a way that everyone can speak at a normal level
• Ensuring that the Wi-Fi requirements were considered by the architects has resulted in a pervasive Wi-Fi network throughout the building. This enables users to work and remain connected regardless of where they are in the building
